Hispanic Heritage Month

Institutional Inclusive Excellence – Student Initiatives observes National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15) which celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens with Hispanic ancestry. They include: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It also honors seven of our Latin American neighbors who celebrate their independence in September. Que viva!

Joining a student organization is a great way to get connected and involved with the Hispanic/Latinx and Texas State community.  Texas State has over 300 student organizations on campus.

    Association for Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting

    ALPFA expands opportunities for students who seek careers in accounting, finance, business and business related fields by empowering them to develop as leaders through the management of student chapters, delivering quality student programs focused on professional development, providing access to our industry network of professional members and sponsors, offering access to scholarship programs and creating opportunities to network with other students.

    First Generation Student Organization

    First Generation Student Organization (FGSO)

    FGSO offers mentoring, advice, and support to assist students in adjusting to college, while offering support in terms of success and study tips including campus resources.  FGSO paves an avenue for students to meet other first gen students while maintaining a good balance in school.

     Grupo Folklorica Ocotochtli

    Grupo Folklorico Ocotochtli

    In November, 1993, ten students representing Hispanic organizations at the Texas State campus gathered to share their culture at the annual homecoming talent show. Because of an award winning performance, Grupo Folklorico emerged into a student campus organization.  Since its inception, it has shared in much success and has performed throughout the University and its surrounding community.

    Our mission as students of Texas State University-San Marcos, in order to serve as a center for the procurement of knowledge, is to foster communication with the McCoy College of Business Administration, create opportunities within the academic and the business community with the intention of developing proper business acumen, provide a medium for cultural enrichment, and encourage the pursuit of true and ethical ideals.

     Houston-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation

    Houston-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation

    H-LSAMP is designed to substantially increase the number of students graduating with baccalaureate degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics, particularly students from diverse backgrounds.  The H-LSAMP formal program enriches each scholar’s university experience through faculty mentoring, undergraduate research and internships, academic and career conferences, peer tutoring, interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and individualized support. Scholars also form the core of the Collaboative Learning Center helping fellow students in peer-to-peer collaborative learning.

    The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. Established in April 1984, NAHJ created a national voice and unified vision for all Hispanic journalists.

Latina/o/x Minor Studies

The undergraduate minor in Latina/o Studies is a multidisciplinary university-wide program. Students learn about the social, political, economic, historical and cultural processes that impact Latina/o communities in the United States. The minor emphasizes applied skills and knowledge, including research skills, for better participating in our diverse society.
