Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Celebration
37th Annual Commemoration Celebration
Tuesday, January 19, 2021
4:00 - 5:00 PM
Virtual Program via Zoom
Texas State University will observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday in the United States that honors the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an American civil rights leader.
At Texas State, the holiday will be observed through a virtual program to honor the legacy of Dr. King and Civil Rights Movement. The program includes remarks from by President Denise Trauth and city of Houston’s Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, and performances by Gospel Expressions, Tierra Johnson, VocaLibre, Hip Hop Congress, and African Student Organization.
Institutional Inclusive Excellence - Student Initiatives normally holds a two-part in-person event (MLK Freedom March and Celebration Program) in observation of MLK Day. Considering the rise in numbers of COVID-19 cases and the most recent recommendations concerning safety precautions, IIE-SI will not host a in-person program. The program is virtual for 2021.
While we are unable to congregate and share the same physical space in fellowship, the TXST community will gather virtually honor Dr. King and celebrate the impact of his contributions for our civil liberties.
MLK Day of Service
MLK Day is also recognized as a day of service. In this spirit, all TXST Bobcats are encouraged you to wear your mask, practice social distancing, and regularly wash your hands. Sign the Bobcat Pledge to help do you part in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

T-Shirts will be given out on a first-come, first-serve. Pick up location is Institutional Inclusive Excellence – Student Initiatives located in LBJ Student Center Suite 2-20.0 (second floor) and from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. One t-shirt per student; must present TXST ID Card.
