Con Dolores Y César: Si, Se Puede
SDI Office sponsors the Con Dolores y César: ¡Si Se Puede! (With Dolores and César: Yes, We Can!) to honor, remember and celebrate César E. Chávez , a co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW). César E. Chávez Day is an official holiday in the U.S. states of California, Colorado and Texas, and, although not a federal holiday, the US President proclaims March 31st of each year as César E. Chávez Day in the United States. Individuals and organizations are encouraged to participate in service to the community to honor Chávez's life and work.
Just as importantly, we celebrate and honor Dolores Huerta, co-founder of UFW and activist, for her role in the success in the movement. It is important to raise awareness of the role of women and marginalized communities of color who played pivotal roles in the migrant and farm worker movement. Theses key individuals and groups organized strikes and boycotts, participated in civil disobedience, protested for equal pay and safe working conditions, and achieved civil liberties during the 1970s. The events highlight triumphs the UFW and their advocacy for the civil liberties of one of the most marginalized populations in our nation – farm workers.
